LPGA event to fold in challenging economy

Corning, NY (Sports Network) - Citing the challenging economic environment and a decline in sponsors, the board of directors of the LPGA Corning Classic announced that 2009 would be the final year for the long-running tournament.
“This is a most difficult decision for all of us,” said tournament president Jack Benjamin. Benjamin said that revenue opportunities would “not support the components needed to successfully host a major event like this in our community moving forward.” The LPGA Corning Classic has been a staple on the women’s tour since Penny Pulz won the inaugural event in 1979. This year’s edition, to be held at Corning Country Club from May 21-24, will be the 31st.
